Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs on or within the ovary. They are very common and most are harmless — many form as part of the normal menstrual cycle and resolve on their own without treatment.
Some cysts, however, cause pain or other symptoms, grow large, or need closer assessment to rule out anything more serious. Dr. Nosheen Batool uses ultrasound (and blood tests where helpful) to characterise the cyst, then advises the right approach — from watchful monitoring to medication or surgery.
What to expect
- A pelvic ultrasound to assess the size, type and features of the cyst.
- Blood tests where they help clarify the cause or assess risk.
- Reassurance and simple monitoring for cysts that are likely to resolve on their own.
- A clear plan for follow-up scans to check whether a cyst is changing.
- Keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery when a cyst is large, persistent or suspicious.
